Cerignola to Canosa di Puglia – 22nd June
Distance: 18.4 km – Elevation +130 m -150 m
Weather: Sunny. Temperature: High 35 degrees
Last night was Friday night and it seemed that everyone in Cerignola had come out to celebrate, at 9 pm the city was alive. I love the way the Italians enjoy this time of day.
My legs were rather reluctant to commence walking when I left just before 7 am so I took a gentle stroll out of the very quiet city. Passing stall holders getting their fruit and vegetables ready for the first customers. The sky was overcast and not too hot. I soon found myself on quiet country roads. Vineyards and olive groves again but this time the vineyards were much much larger. More activity too – small tractors with spray tanks were everywhere darting in and out of the rows of vines.
Cerignolo lies in the centre of the Tavoliere delle Puglie, a large fertile plain. The area produces large quantities of both wine and table grapes, and olives.
A relatively short walk today and a leisurely pace. It is surprising even at a gentle pace how quickly distance is covered – I arrived in Canosa in time for the afternoon siesta.
Bric a Brac stalls lined the main street in Canosa on Saturday night, much perusing but not much buying from the local residents as they gathered in the main square. I chose a restaurant offering traditional local food and it was delicious – 5 plates of antipasti – a superb pasta course and a carafe of white wine.
