Bovino to Castelluccio dei Sauri – 19th June

Distance: 16.5 km – Elevation +110 m -540 m

Weather: Sunny. Temperature: High 27 degrees

The problems I experienced with yesterday’s accommodation took me way off my planned route so using my tracking app I replotted a route from Bovino to Castelluccio dei Sauri – the original destination for today’s walk.

I was really tired when I arrived last night and slept without eating consequently a large breakfast was needed this morning. I had about 17 kilometres to walk today so a leisurely start this morning with a typical Italian breakfast of croissants, fruit, and coffee. I had business to do at the local post office so it was weĺl past 9 am before I left Bovino. Bovino is an ancient hill town and the people are lovely.

One thing I forgot to mention is that for the past few days I have been crossing the Apennines, hence the number of ups and downs. I am now over them and it’s fairly flat walking now. The Apennines were very beautiful and different to the northern Apennines which I crossed last year in the opposite direction when walking from Canterbury to Rome, I know they have been difficult at times but I will miss their beauty. The brilliant yellow of the mountain broom, the wildflowers, butterflies I have never seen before in brilliant colours of yellow, orange, blue and spotted back. The farmers too who have been so friendly.

Today was another glorious day with the path descending from Bobino to the plains below. The views extended for a far distance across the plains towards the Adriatic and also back to the Apennines I had left behind. I arrived in Castelluccio dei Sauri at 2.30 pm.

I should really check the location of the accommodation when booking ahead. Today’s B&B, whilst listed as being in Castelluccio dei Sauri is in fact 6 kilometres from the town centre. Fortunately, it has its own restaurant so I was able to enjoy a good supper.
